CHARDON, OH (September, 26, 2017) – Matt Meyer (The Golf Club) and Matt Wills (Jefferson Country Club) won the Egg Invitational in record-setting fashion Tuesday, finishing at 13-under 203 for a one-shot win at Mayfield Sand Ridge Golf Club.
Meyer and Wills shot a four-under 68 to hold off the hard-charging team of David Hall (Detroit Golf Club) and Henry Do (Polo Fields Golf & Country Club), who shot the low round of the tournament with a seven-under 65 to post a 12-under 204.
Starting the day with a one shot lead, Meyer and Wills watched as Hall and Do birdied holes 5 through 8 on the way to a six-under 30, taking the lead by one shot heading in to the back nine.
Hall and Do slowed down a little coming in, only picking up one more shot, but still managed to post a number that would have won each of the three previous Egg Invitationals.
But Meyer and Wills stepped on the gas on the back nine, with a remarkable streak that saw them go birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, six straight threes. Their 203 (-13) total set the tournament scoring record, topping last year’s winning score of 207 (-9).
Hall and Do finished alone in second in an impressive performance as first-time Egg Invitational participants.
The defending champions Damian Rhodes (Mayfield Sand Ridge) and Jeff O’Brien (Shaker Heights Country Club) were right in the mix, at one point getting to 11 under after O’Brien chipped in on the 11th hole. But in the end they had to settle for a final round of 70 and a tie for third at 10-under 206.
Jim Krivanek (Mayfield Sand Ridge) and Brian Smith (Oberlin Golf Club) shot the day’s second best round, a six-under 66, to move into the tie for third with Rhodes and O’Brien.
Thanks to all of the players and congratulations to Matt Meyer and Matt Wills for winning the Egg Invitational!
